The Western Australian Electoral Commission releases formal response to Special Inquiry report

The Western Australian Electoral Commission (WAEC) has released its formal response to the Special Inquiry into the Planning and Delivery of the 2025 State General Election.

The WAEC welcomed the findings of the Special Inquiry and acknowledges the valuable guidance it provides. Following a detailed review, the WAEC has confirmed its support, or support in principle, for all recommendations within its scope and is committed to implementing them leading up to the 2029 State General Election.

In a significant step toward transparency and accountability, the WAEC has launched dedicated pages on its website to provide regular updates on the implementation of the Special Inquiry’s recommendations.

These pages serve as a central source of information, offering updates on the progress of each of the 24 recommendations outlined in the report. They present a clear overview of current focus areas, reform timelines and responses from both the Government and WAEC, helping users understand the context, findings and significance of the Special Inquiry.

By making this information easily accessible, the WAEC reinforces its dedication to accountability and continuous improvement in the delivery of elections across Western Australia.

Acting Electoral Commissioner Dennis O’Reilly said the WAEC’s response is a key step in its efforts toward meaningful reform.

“Our commitment is to implement the Inquiry’s recommendations, ensuring the WAEC is well-positioned to meet the evolving needs of electoral delivery in Western Australia,” said Mr O’Reilly.

“We understand the importance of meeting public expectation in the electoral process, and we are determined to earn and uphold trust through transparency, accountability and action.”
