Closing date for State election party registrations 5 February 2024

Legislation applying to the registration of political parties requires a political party to lodge an application for registration by 5 February 2024, if they wish to use the party name on a ballot paper at the State general election due in March 2025. This does not apply to political parties already registered or those with a current application lodged with the Electoral Commission. Applications for party registration can still be lodged after 5 February 2024, however the party will be ineligible to contest the State election with their party name on the ballot paper, even if the application is successful.

An application for party registration must include:

  • A completed application form that states the name and ballot paper name of the party, as well as details for the party secretary
  • A list of 500 members who are electors
  • Declaration forms for each of the members provided in the list
  • A copy of the party’s constitution
  • $2,000 application fee

Applications are advertised in the Candidates and Parties section on the Commission’s website - Applications and Notices.
