Vote counting for the City of Swan is anticipated to be completed on Thursday after the WA Electoral Commission moved to electronic verification of ballot papers for the mayoral election. This involves the entry and verification of the details on each ballot paper into a computer system before preferences are calculated and reported.
This process will ensure the accuracy and integrity of the result in the election. It will take most of Wednesday and Thursday to complete the task and it is hoped that the mayoral election result will be completed on Thursday.
Altone and Whiteman wards are unaffected and should be declared soon. The remaining wards cannot finalise their count until the mayoral election is completed as candidates are involved in both ward and mayoral elections. They will be finalised shortly after the mayoral election is completed.
The Commission’s focus at this time is ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the election result as quickly as possible. To this end additional computer resources and personnel have been deployed to the count and the count will continue into Wednesday evening. The ratepayers of the City of Swan will not incur any of these additional costs arising from this election.
