Another important step in the process of filling the Legislative Assembly vacancy in the district of Rockingham was completed today.
The legal instruments (writ and certificate) directing the Electoral Commissioner to conduct the Rockingham by-election have been returned to the Governor today by the Electoral Commissioner.
Ms Magenta Marshall was declared as the elected candidate by the Returning Officer on Friday 4 August 2023.
The WA Electoral Commission completed a full distribution of preferences on Friday 4 August 2023. This process allowed votes cast interstate and late postal arrivals to be included in the count. Therefore the result will be slightly different from that finalised on polling day.
After this distribution of all preferences the final two party distribution gave Ms Marshall 61.37% of the valid votes cast with Ms Hayley Edwards obtaining the remainder of the preferences with 38.63%. Details of the final distribution of preferences are available at the website State By-elections | Western Australian Electoral Commission (NB: due to website changes, you may need to press your ‘Ctrl’ and ‘F5’ keys together to refresh the webpage to display the results)
Note for media: Ms Marshall will be sworn in by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Hon Michelle Roberts MLA. Details of this ceremony can be obtained from Parliament House.
