Nominations for the 2021 local government biennial ordinary elections closed yesterday, Thursday 9 September at 4.00pm.

The Western Australian Electoral Commission has been requested to manage elections for 98 of the State's 139 local governments, from Halls Creek in the north, Cocos Keeling Islands in the west, Esperance in the south and all Perth metropolitan councils.

Commission appointed Returning Officers accepted nominations for 471 vacancies up for election. In total, nominations were taken from 941 candidates. Total nominations are down slightly compared to the 2019 ordinary elections. However, when compared to the total number of vacancies the number is lower.

At three metropolitan town councils - Claremont, East Fremantle and Mosman Park - and one shire (Narrogin) the position of Mayor was elected unopposed. In total, 75 councillor positions were elected unopposed across the elections being conducted by the Commission. This figure is the highest it has been since 2013. Most of those unopposed will represent rural shires.

The City of Bunbury has 10 candidates vying for the position of Mayor, while the City of Gosnells has 28 candidates contesting 6 Councillor vacancies and the City of Perth has 16 candidates contesting 4 Councillor vacanies.

Six non-metropolitan shires will need to conduct extraordinary elections after not receiving sufficient candidates to fill their available vacancies.
